I have owned this cute portable tv for two weeks and enjoyed it every minute. It has a clear picture, program guide for digital stations, and closed caption. I feel obliged to write a review to share with you about this TV.

Reception:

Many users complained about poor reception on this TV. My advice is to change a better quality antenna. I only get 1 channel with the included antenna. I can get 20 channels with an antenna from a Pinnacle USB tv tuner. This antenna has a 2.5" magnetic base. It is very similar to Axion portable tv's external antenna. Yes, 45, super clear, no interference channels. I can pull stations from 25-30 miles away.

Sound issue:

I agree with most reviewers here. The sound is tinny on this portable tv. But after hours of research before purchase, I found it is a common problem for almost all portable TVs and even many regular LCD TVs. To keep TVs slim and small, the manufacturers have to use small speakers which compromise the sound quality to a great degree.

Why I choose Haier as opposed to Axion?

Because Haier has a replaceable battery and Axion's battery is solded inside. And we know that batteries do not live long, usually 3-5 years. Batteries can leak if it is not taken out after drain.

Suggestions to the manufacturer

Include a case for this portable TV to make it really portable, free from scratches.

I bought this TV unit to place on my desk next to my computer screen (22" LCD) while I play, game, and do homework. It picked up all 80 of the Cable Stations provided by Time Warner to my school. It even picked up the 3 Local Stations (NBC, FOX, and CBS) that also provide Digital signals through basic cable. The 3 digital stations (in addition to their standard counterparts) are shown at 480p (max resolution for device) with perfect audio quality. It even picked up the QAM Encrypted channels between 75-130. It shows them as 75-3, 75-4, etc. I have not gotten them to work, but this is because the Cable Company does not offer them to our University.

The TV by default Zooms (crops) 4:3 programs fullscreen (16:9) on the device. It actually stretches the video, but the screen is so small that you won't notice the additional width of people or objects. (With horizontal sidebars your talking maybe 1/2" on either side of the TV). The Digital channels (QAM and ATSC either over cable or air) are shown only in the native (at 480p) aspect ratios (you can't change them like you can the rest of the channels). The cropping\zooming will become less of an issue as more programs are shown at 16:9 even over standard definition cable.

Did I mention this LCD TV works as a PC Monitor!!! If your TV offers a S-video or Composite (Yellow color cable) out (which most modern graphics cards have, or a 99cent adapter for a laptop S-video port) you can treat this LCD TV as a second monitor for your computer or laptop. Its only 640x480, but that is plenty of room to put your Buddy List, Twitter Feed, Email Client, etc. I keep iTunes in the window so that I can play with my music while I'm playing a game, or writing a paper. Just note that the refresh rate on this TV\monitor is only 30hz (so visible flicker when displaying text)

I have had success hooking this device up to a N64, DVD Player, My Computer (via a S-video to Y-composite adapter), and my Zune. About the Zune, because the Zune 8 GB Digital Media Player (Black) does not have speakers, simply plug in your Video\Audio cable from your Zune to this device and you have a portable display (3x larger) with stereo sound with a good 1hr and half of battery charge. I'm debating bringing my Battery Backup system (860VA) to the beach with my lounge chair, which would give me 40 minutes of N64 playing while hooked up to this device.

The only thing to note is that I have not had success with over-the-air signals. However, my campus is on the ocean (literally) and about 5 miles from town, I plan on bringing the included telescoping antennae

I tried attaching an amplified indoor HDTV antenna and it didn't work any better than the antenna that came with the Haier TV. I do have to move the TV around the room sometimes to get a better signal on some channels, but that is easy to do because it is so portable. I plug it in only when the battery needs recharging. The anntena screws into the jack on the right hand side of the t.v. and does not fold flat against it as a result-there are clips on the top of the t.v. that are intended to hold it(after you unscrew it), but these are to small, and the anntena tends to pop out unexpectedly as a result. When the anntena is in its jack, adjusting it will cause it to come loose, requiring extra attention to tighten it in place. The battery's refusal to take a charge however, was this little set's downfall. Repeated attempts to charge the battery proved futile-the owner's manual warns of this for some reason, even though I cannot recall experiencing this with other lipo battery powered items that I own. The t.v. did work when plugged into a wall outlet. Received my 7" Haier in late May. Set it up immediately and was disappointed with the number of local stations it was able to pull in.

Knowing that digital can be more difficult to receive, I recently purchased a good set of rabbit ears and proceeded to reprogram it. It did better but still not worthwhile.

I then set-up two separate TV's with the same rabbit ears. One TV was already digital (a 19" Sharp with built in digital tuner), the 2nd TV was an old analog (12" Sony). We have a converter box for the Sony and use it in our bathroom where we can not easily run our cable system. Both TV's worked well and pulled in every local station including several that the Haier could not.

I am returning the Haier and will stick with one of the other two TV's in event of power failure (we live in an area of Florida that has frequent power outages). I will power the other TV's with a 110V battery back up system we have for emergency.

Some day, when one of the good manufacturers make a decent battery powered digital TV, I will gladly buy it. We had two (2) battery powered analog ones we just stopped using when the analog stations went off the air (a Sony and a Panasonic). I live just outside the old city limits of Louisville before it became Metro, and inside the old inner expressway circling the city. I returned the Haier for lack of reception.

The unit begins by searching for stations and building a database of them, before it can receive any. With the supplied antenna, the unit failed to find any stations to build a database. ("No Database") After connection to a cable, it found plenty of stations and built a database, and of course received perfectly. However, after the cable was replaced by the supplied antenna, it failed to receive any stations in the database. ("No Reception")

I bought the Haier to use off-cable in a bathroom and during storms, and did not want to buy whatever expensive third party antenna might be needed to get it to receive stations. Amazon's vendor was good enough to allow me to return it.

Unless I visit my Canadian relatives (before 2011) my former analog hand-held b&w TV isn't much good anymore...and I must say that this 7" Haier portable is a welcome replacement.

What I like is the clear picture, the general ease of use, the capabilities of adjusting picture and other settings to very personal levels, and it has pretty good sound too.

What I'm not too crazy about, is that the whip antenna supplied with the unit is next to useless. The "antenna-farm" for this area is about 10 miles from my house. The "whipper" just won't capture much of a useable signal on most channels, so I've been forced to purchase separate antennas. (see my other reviews) Also, the unit's tuner, while receiving both analog & digital broadcasts...seems to lack a bit of sensitivity, whereby I've had to go to a stronger antenna, than what I was using on a 13" 1980-something Radio Shack TV (with converter) to get the same channels on the Haier.

I guess the battery is ok. 2 hrs runtime? -- 6 hrs to charge. And by the way, the battery charge light go ON, EVERYtime the AC adapter is plugged in! I just hope if left plugged-in (with full charge--showing a green light) that it doesn't OVERcharge.

I've had this for about 1 month and am very pleased with it. It seems that most reviewers are dissatisfied with the antenna/reception. Since the transition to digital transmission, it is my understanding that the signals are sent using UHF. I believe that the supplied antenna is a VHF type, which causes so many people to have problems. Remember the "old" UHF loop antennas that used to come with televisions? (Approx. 10" round metal about the size of coat hanger wire) This is all one needs now to receive the digital signals. I use an 18" coax cable, a 75-300 ohm converter, and a UHF loop antenna with my Haier 7" tv with excellent results. Online, you can purchase these items for easily under $5. The tv also works great when plugged into a wall jack for a rooftop antenna. (Combination UHF/VHF that is 30 years old!) The UHF loop antenna setup works equally as well outside as it does inside.
I also use the same setup with a 22" wall-mounted flat LCD screen in my house. The only thing different is that I used a longer cable so I could extend the loop antenna up near the ceiling so that the signal wouldn't get blocked by people moving about the house.

It simply does not receive any meaningful channels. My prior digital portable broke, although it previously had excellent reception of ABC, NBC, and CBS.

The Haier gets does not get ABC, nor does it receive NBC, nor does it receive CBS. In fact, it gets only some strange weather channel, and only recives that channel on an intermittent basis.

Cute TV but not built to last. Picture died after 7 months of light usage. The audio followed. I called Haier America's customer service and was told I would have to find a local TV repair place to go to. After 90 days labor is not covered just parts. They have no official repair service sites to recommend. This TV would probably cost more in labor to fix than it cost originally. This is a great little TV. Living in Kansas and dealing with powerful storms, we experience power outages. This little gem lets us stay informed. Because we live in a rural area, far from broadcast stations, we only receive 2 channels on the antenna included, but hooked up to our outside antenna we receive 14. That's all any TV receives over the air in this area. The picture is excellent, it just couldn't be a better deal for us. We also enjoy it on the patio and in the kitchen, both areas where we can plug it in. Battery life on it seems to be good, and I like that it includes a cigarette lighter adapter, as well as a regular household adapter and the battery. That way if the power outage is extended for days, as it sometimes is, and we have depleted the battery, we can watch the news in the car and see where the weather is and what to expect. I purchased this TV seven months ago to prepare for the changeover to digital--I needed a very small set in a place with no cable connection. At first it received a number of stations and the reception, although not good, was marginally acceptable. Since the changeover to digital one month ago, I have been unable to receive ANY station other than a small religious channel I've never even heard of -- this despite the fact that I live in a major city! I contacted customer service at Haier and they called my attention to the fact that the product brochure warns that "not all channels may be available, depending on location." They did not address the fact that, save one, NO channel might be available. They further informed me that (1) they do not service this product, and (2) they cannot provide a list of local repair shops for Haier. (I was told to look in the yellow pages, and there is no entry for Haier there.) In theory, my warranty still covers replacement parts but, without anyone to check the set, I am out of luck.
